Safety Tips for Kids

IF YOU’RE NOT SURE WHAT TO DO, BE SURE TO TALK THESE SAFETY TIPS OVER WITH A GROWNUP YOU TRUST!
  1. It’s summer!  Be sure to let your parents or other caregiver know WHERE you are, WHO you’re with, and WHEN you’ll be home! When you’re staying at a friend’s house, be sure you know WHAT TO DO if the friend’s parents or other caregiver leaves the house.  Is it OK for you to play there still, without a grownup in the house, or do you think you should call home?  What do mom and dad think?
  2. Information & Activities Just for Kids
If you and a friend are on the computer at your house, and a “yucky” picture comes up on the computer screen, be sure you know how to get off the computer -  and tell a grownup what happened!
  3. If you’re playing outside with a group of friends, and an adult or an older kid you “sort of” know from your neighborhood says you should come inside their house for a treat, it’s a good idea NOT to do that – SAY NO! and tell a grownup you trust what happened!
  4. When you’re home alone, and the doorbell rings – should you answer it?  What do you think?  What do mom and dad think?  LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS TOGETHER!
  5. When you’re home alone, and the phone rings – should you answer it?  What do you think?  What do mom and dad think?  LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS TOGETHER!
  6. If you’re walking home – and you’re still quite a ways from home, and you’re tired, too! – and someone you know offers you a ride home in their car, should you go with them?  What do you think?   What do mom and dad think?  LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS TOGETHER!
  7. Anytime I feel my “uh-oh” feeling, or I’m worried about something or someone, I know I can talk with a grownup I trust to help me figure out WHAT TO DO!
  8. If mom or dad says I need to be home at a certain time, and I have trouble or think I’ll be late, I need to call ahead of time and talk it over with my parents, so they won’t be worried about me!    THINK AHEAD!
  9. If a kid I know says it’s ok with their parents that I come home with him or her after day care, and I haven’t checked it out with my parents – I need to ask if we can do this another time!  I know mom and dad will be worried if I don’t show up at home!  THINK AHEAD!
  10. If I’m at day camp and another kid takes my lunch, or steals my money, or makes me feel afraid – I know I can tell a grownup about it, and get help!   WHO SHOULD I TELL?  LET’S TALK ABOUT IT!
  11. If you’re walking home with your little brother or sister, and they start crying and say something that makes you feel mad (like, “I’m tired – carry me!” – and you’re tired, too!)  - take a deep breath, and say – “Mom and dad need us to get home soon!  Let me help you!” – even if you don’t want to.  IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE KIND TO EACH OTHER -  TALK ABOUT THIS WITH A GROWNUP AT HOME!
  12. HERE’S A SITUATION – WHAT DO YOU THINK?  Let’s pretend you’re not allowed to be on the computer at your house, but your friend says it’s ok to go on the computer at their house.  So you both go on the computer at your friend’s house, and you’re talking with somebody you don’t know.  What if that person – the person you don’t know – says “let’s meet somewhere!”   WHAT WOULD YOU DO?   DON”T GO TO MEET THEM – AND TELL A GROWNUP WHAT HAPPENED!
